Determine the type of insurance you'll need.
Two important types of car rental insurance you should have are liability and collision insurance. Collision insurance covers damages incurred by the car you're renting or driving, while liability insurance covers expenses if you injure somebody during an accident. However, make sure first that these insurance types are not yet covered by your credit card provider to avoid multiple expenses. Some credit cards offer some sort of free car rental insurance. If you're not sure on what's included, better contact your credit card company.
Prepare funds for the initial deposit.
If the car rental company offers optional car insurance and you said no, be prepared to cough up a substantial amount for the initial deposit. This is because car rentals usually put a hold on your credit card if you decline the optional insurance. They can do this by charging a deposit that's worth thousands of dollars. To avoid any issues later on, make sure to carry another major credit card when renting a car in Alberta.
Now once you've paid for the rental car insurance, keep in mind that your claims may be considered void if the accident or damage was caused by reckless driving or driving under the influence.
