Limited Benefits and Services of AHCIP

Limited Benefits and Services of AHCIP
The AHCIP or Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan is a publicly funded and administered health care system for Albertans. However, the AHCIP has certain limitations when it comes to available benefits.

Examples of services with limited benefits

For optometry and podiatry services, the AHCIP offers partial coverage. Such services have limits for the coverage you can receive in a benefit year. The benefit year starts at July 1 and ends at June 30 of the following year. When the expenses for a service goes beyond the limit, the patient must pay for the cost difference.

Foot health care services have a maximum benefit of $250 per individual within a benefit year. As for vision health care, one diagnostic procedure, one partial exam, and one complete exam within a benefit year are covered for children 19 years old and below, and for seniors aging 65 years old and above. Certain dental, maxillofacial surgical, and oral services may be fully covered by the AHCIP. But this doesn't include routine procedures such as wisdom teeth extraction, fillings, and cleaning. Under the AHCIP, chiropractic services are no longer included in the coverage starting July 1, 2009. For physical therapy services, they are not included in the AHCIP but are instead covered by the Community Rehabilitation Program under your health region.

If you are not sure whether a specific medical procedure or health care service is covered by AHCIP, it's best to consult a healthcare professional. He or she will be able to advise you on what is and what is not included in your public health insurance.
